ABOUT COOCHIE!!

Mathew Flinders and his crew first stepped ashore Coochiemudlo Island on
19th July 1799.

The aborigines in the area had been visiting Coochie well before Matthew’s incredible navigational journey from London. Local aborigines from Stradbroke Island aparently held various celebrations and ceremonies on Coochiemudlo. They named Coochiemudlo, (Kutchimudlo) meaning RED ROCK, not only because of the rich, volcanic, red soil found here, but also because of the huge “Red Rock” on the south-west side of the island, which is clearly visible from Victoria Point.

Coochiemudlo was used for farming in the early1890s. The island was filled with custard apple orchards, banana plantations and more.

Coochiemudlo became popular with tourists in the early 1940s. Brisbane’s famous passenger cruise boat “The Miramar" use to transport day visitors from Brisbane River to Coochie and the Bay islands on the weekends.

Over 30 years ago the island had only a sprinkling of little holiday shacks, with a barge service only operating once every two weeks. Now Coochie has many holiday homes as well as full-time residents who commute daily to work on the regular
half hour ferry service.

Today, Coochie is more popular than ever, mainly because of its magical
old fashioned charm. Coochie has a quiet, sleepy, little village feel to it with welcoming sandy beaches, calming blue waters and its untouched natural beauty that still shines!
